Associate Research Scientist

The Department of Chemistry at Columbia University invites applications for an Associate Research Scientist appointment who will serve as the manager of the shared Mass Spectrometry core facility.  The facility consists several Mass Spectrometers including an Waters Xevo QTOF, Bruker MALDI TOF/TOF with imaging capability, Waters Synapt QTOF with DESI imaging capability, Agilent GC-MS, and two quadrupole instruments. The candidate’s responsibilities include: collaborate with investigators to solve chemical and biochemical problems, implement new technologies in the Center, maintain and troubleshoot instruments, measure submitted samples, direct user billing, instruct students in instrument operation, develop training procedures and guides, and teach Mass Spectrometry to students with diverse backgrounds.

Required Qualifications

  • A Ph.D. in Chemistry or related discipline with 1-5 years of experience in Mass Spectrometry
  • Excellent communication skills in oral and written English,
  • Ability to work independently as well as part of a team, flexibility to interact with a diverse group of researchers, and a willingness and ability to teach Mass Spectrometry.
  • Strong data analysis and interpretation skills.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Working knowledge or research experience in organic chemistry
  • Research experience in Chemical Biology
  • Post-doctoral experience
  • Experience with HPLC-QTOF
  • Experience with MS imaging
  • Familiarity with MS imaging software such as Waters’ HDI, Bruker’s flexImaging, and SCiLS Lab Pro MVS
  • In-depth knowledge of instrument operation and maintenance
  • Familiarity with all major types of ionization
