Summary

Tudor Spataru is a Chemical Researcher and Chemical Educator. He received his Master’s degree in Inorganic Chemistry from State University, Republic of Moldova under the supervision of Isaac Bersuker in 1972.  His research investigated the electronic structure and quantum chemical analysis of the cobalt dioximine reactivity.  Upon graduating, he joined the Prof. V.V. Sobolev laboratory at Physical Institute of the Moldova Academy of Sciences, where he focused on studying the optical properties of crystals.  Since 1976, he has been at the Institute of Chemistry of the Moldova Academy of Sciences, earning in the year 1983 his Ph.D. in the Inorganic Chemistry field with the topic “Electronic Structure and Properties of the Dioximates” under direction of Isaac Bersuker.  He continued his research in the Bioinorganic Chemistry Laboratory at the Institute of Chemistry as a senior scientific researcher until the year 1999, where he used electronic structure calculations and physico-chemical methods in the study of bio-active compounds.  From 1991 until 1999 Tudor Spataru was the thesis supervisor of both master's and doctoral students in the Chemistry Department of the State University of Moldova and he also taught the special course "Application of Mathematical Methods in Chemistry" at the Faculty of Chemistry of the State University of Moldova.  From1999 until 2004 he was a fellow associate researcher in the Mechanical Engineering Department at Padua University, Italy, where he studied with Prof. Giovani Principi the intermetallic and hydrogen storage materials.  From 2004 until 2007 he was a fellow associate researcher at City College, CUNY, US, where he studied with Prof. Ronald Birke the electronic structure and properties of forms of Vitamin B12.  In 2007 he joined the Chemistry Department of Columbia University.  Tudor Spataru has published more than 70 papers in European and US peer-review journals, and more than 30 papers in open access journals. Tudor Spataru was awarded the 1st prize at the Balkan Conference on Chemistry in 1996. Tudor Spataru has participated in more than 100 international conferences and as a plenary speaker and Organizing Committee Member at the International Conferences on Catalysis. Tudor Spataru in actively involved in the didactical and research activity of the department.
