N-Heterocyclic carbene ligands stabilize group 11 metal complexes featuring unusual metal–element or metal–metal bonding. These ligands have afforded access to distinctly different architectures than those available using phosphine ligands. This talk will present studies of the synthesis, structural and reactivity of dinuclear and trinuclear group 11 metal complexes such as delocalized mixed-valent species, hydrides, and fluorides. Using these species, we are studying key steps in potential catalytic transformations of small molecules.
